The game started off with both sides just finding out how they were both going to approach the match. Norwich completely hogged the ball, having most of the possession in the opening exchanges. Birmingham were working on the counter. With Jota, Maghoma, Jutkiewicz and Adams in the attack, Blues had all they needed to hurt the Yellows. It was honours even in terms of shots on goal – six each. Jutkiewicz had a really good chance which he sliced across the face of goal, with Maghoma also having a shot easily caught by keeper Tim Krul.
As the game opened up, Norwich began to stretch the Birmingham defence and they had a couple of chances from corners. One cross from Norwich saw a header of theirs brilliantly saved by Trueman, to keep it goalless. The first half was what was expected, both teams trying to transfer what they’ve been doing during the summer onto the pitch.
As the second half began, the ice broke and Blues grew more and more into the game. It was even in terms of chances as well in the second half, ten chances each. There wasn’t much inspiring play through the middle from Birmingham, everything went through Jota and Maghoma. Che Adams wasn’t heavily involved although Birmingham’s two wide men as previously mentioned were both on form, especially Maghoma. It was that man who opened the scoring with a bullet of a strike to give the Blue Boys the lead.
Birmingham were in the ascendancy although you could always tell Norwich we’re going to make their way into the game and that they did after Oriol Hernandez made a damaging run and the shot was pretty lucky, after a slight deflection. The scores 1-1.
Norwich again slipped away and Blues turned it up after Viv Solomon Otabor was substituted on for Jota. Viv made an instant impact with a goal minutes from time to set Blues up for the three points but in the 94th minute, a second goal from Norwich winger Hernandez settled it and the points were shared.
Not a bad way to start the season, unbeaten. Norwich were patient and played well enough to knick the point.
