Blues have been linked with a season long loan move for Saints forward Sam Gallagher, according to Sky Sports.
The 21-year-old is eager to get first-team football under his belt and new boss Mauricio Pellegrino is willing to let him go on a temporary basis.
However, Blues face tough competition for his signature, with Villa and Derby also keen on his services.
Gallagher was very impressive during his loan spell at Blackburn last term, scoring 11 times.
The England Under-20 international came through the youth ranks at Plymouth Argyle before making the switch to Southampton aged 16.
The 6ft 4 poacher recently signed a four-year contract with the Saints, but has not featured so far this season.
