Blues Ladies have announced the signing of goalkeeper Katrin Berger from PSG.
The 25-year-old joins Blues after spending the last two seasons with the French side. The second signing this week began her career in her homeland Germany for Sindelfingen, before moving to Turbine Potsdam.
This signing is a big statement, not only for the club but for the FAWSL too. Berger will provide much needed competition for Sophie Baggaley, as she has been the only keeper in the ranks after Becky Spencer left for Chelsea in pre-season.
On her move to Birmingham Berger said:
“I’m really excited to play for Birmingham City Ladies. The young team, facilities, staff and vision convinced me to sign. I’m looking forward to the new challenge and I will give my best to help the team achieve our goals.”
Blues Ladies manager David Parker said:
“To sign Paris Saint-Germain’s No.1 Goalkeeper says it all and we have had to work hard to prise her away from that fantastic Club and European giant.
“It is another signal of intent and statement that we can attract the very best players to the Club with the vision and strategy we have.
“When meeting Ann-Katrin and showing her everything we had to offer at the Club she was blown away by what we are developing here and wants to be part of this special journey we are embarking upon. She has achieved so much domestically in France and Germany and now with a new challenge she wants to experience this same success and journey in England.”
Blues Ladies have been busy in the transfer market during their summer break. This week there have been two departures and one incoming transfer. News broke yesterday that long serving Jo Potter and Jade Moore have left the club after approaching the Club during the mid-season break to negotiate buying out their remaining 6 months on their contract, which were due to expire in December this year.
All is well though, the club have received good deals on both players as they could have left for free in the new year. The future is bright for the ladies and the good news has come back around with new signing Andrine Hegerberg being added to the ranks.
Hegerberg is one of the highest rated players in Europe, and her signing is a real coup for David Parker’s side who currently sit third in the FA WSL 1 table. They sit seven points behind leaders Manchester City, but have a game in hand over their rivals.
The future looks bright for the ladies who look to kick on after a great start to the season so far.
