Gianfranco Zola lined up as Gary Rowett’s replacement

Gianfranco Zola is the leading candidate to replace Gary Rowett as Blues manager, according to various sources.

Blues fans have been left stunned that one of the brightest young managers in the league, who took Blues from rock bottom, has now left the club.

Now, it is understood Chelsea legend Zola is Blues’ new owners (Trillion Trophy Asia) first choice to take the hot seat, as they want a high-profile name in charge of the club.

The Italian was close to taking over at Hull in the summer but it fell through. The former West Ham and Watford manager is now looking to get back into the game and it looks like he could be heading to St Andrews.

Three new directors were appointed on Monday as part of the takeover by Trillion Trophy Asia – Wenqing Zhao, Chun Kong Yiu and Zhu Kai – and this decision appears more than coincidence.

Blues sit just three points off third place Reading after 21 games. Rowett’s reign saw his team win nine games this season, drawing seven and losing five.

This decision has not only shocked Birmingham fans, but the wider football community too.

Club Director Panos Pavlakis, on behalf of the Board, said:

‘Such a parting of the ways is always difficult, particularly so on a personal level as I have worked very closely with Gary and have got to know him well.

‘Our relationship was very strong but in football you can never stand still. I would ask that our supporters trust our judgement and look forward to and embrace the future as we begin to implement the exciting vision of TTAL.’

What do you think, does Zola fit the bill?

  1. Absolutely flabbergasted. A short tenure in relative terms but Gary was and always will be a legend at St Andrews. He worked miracles. Whoever’s next has big boots to fill. Joys and sorrows and all that jazz. Tumultuous day but we must KEEP RIGHT ON!

  2. mad mad mad , more idiots in charge , dont bring in zola maybe big sam

thanks gary your a hero and best wishes you have a great future

  3. Many of us will remain Gary Rowett fans and wish him well (as long as he doesn’t go to the dark side). He is a truly dignified manager and I will follow his career whichever team he leads next; I’m sure many chairmen will be on his case over the next few days and I wouldn’t be surprised if attempts to speak with him have been made already. I guess also a lot of managers will now feel very insecure. We are at the mercy of the new owners – IN ROWETT WE TRUSTED –

  4. The new manager will be cautiously welcomed but it could easily turn sour – Rowett was our man and we were looking forward to the January transfer window with great optimism, many fans are now very bewildered by this turn of events. If the results come our way, I’m sure all will be well, but at the moment there is an element of anger amongst supporters. Any fool can waste money, successive Villa managers have done it for years – Rowett had limited resources and used them wisely in most case, Diego Fabrini, might be the exception, although I believe he has a future at Blues and may be relishing the prospect of working under GZ. IN ROWETT WE TRUSTED.

  5. Sad to see Gary Rowett go – we’re doing so well in the table under his skills. Wishing you & your back room staff all the very best & THANK YOU from the bottom of my Blue heart.
