Rumour: Blues set to announce permanent signing of Middlesbrough centre-forward

9

Following the news of the EFL allowing Blues to be able to bring in five further additions, it seems Garry Monk is wasting no time in pushing deals over the line.

Although both clubs are yet to confirm this news, an inside source has told us Blues have captured the signing of Middlesbrough centre-forward Ashley Fletcher.

The highly rated 22-year-old began his senior career at Man United, before moving to the Olympic Stadium as a Hammer. During his one year stint at West Ham, the England U20 gained valuable first team experience but was unable to make a major breakthrough largely limited to just the odd ten minutes or so from the bench.

Fletcher then joined Monk’s Boro last year for £6.5 million, signing a four-year contract. In January 2018, he then made a deadline day switch to Sunderland, signing on loan for the remainder of the season. The youngster scored his first goal for Sunderland in a 4-1 win at Derby on 30 March 2018.

The question is, do Boro really need him? He’s currently fourth choice striker behind the likes of Britt Assombalonga, Rudy Gestede and Martin Braithwaite.

It’s also woth noting Monk was a keen admirer of the forward during his time in charge at Boro, with the Blues boss giving him a start against Wolves on the opening day of the season. If true, this will no doubt be a move that suits both parties as Boro won’t miss him and Blues will welcome his services more than most.

The EFL statement this week read Blues are able to bring in a further five additions before the window closes on August 9 (albeit under strict conditions relating to wage caps and loan fees).

What do you think, is this a good signing for Monk? Let us know in the comment section below.

  1. How can Blues permanently sign a player who has a contract with Boro’ until 2021 and cost £6.5m in 2017 under the current restrictions?
    You are having a laugh.

  2. By loaning him then buying him at a later date. He will also probably have to have his wage reduced. But any additions to the forward line would be a good idea. Then a midfielder next and a defender. With 2 utility players to make up the 5 allowed.

  3. Have I read it correctly that we cant sign payers on more than 600k a season? I imagine he is on more than this so even on loan he would be out of our range.

  4. Not necessarily true the club must know what restrictions they are operating under. For me this could be Good News A Player Our Manager knows well and rates highly, if he is to sign him. “Note Gary Monk is A Legend- Gets our club gets our Fans fair play to him Pep – James Beathe and the rest of his managerial team, for coming out today a Stating We are here we will manage The Club through this difficult period”. KRO-

  5. FAKD NEWS. !!!

    NOT SIGNING FLETCHER !!!
WE DEFINITELY WONT BE ALLOWED TO BRING A PLAYER LIKE HIM IN.
I recon the EFL will be really arsey with us, and probably block ANY signings Blues try to make.
But, Fletcher WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE COMING IN, TRUST ME. !!!

    KRO
    IN MONK I BELIEVE !!!
