Blues have emerged as favourites to sign Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 32-year-old has travelled to Portugal for the club’s pre-season tour, but is set to be moved on after Garry Monk has told him he can leave the club.

Promoted Brighton have also been linked with the former England international, with an enquiry from Midlands rivals Villa turned down in January.

Downing has only scored 4 goals in 68 appearances for Boro, but his experience would be second to none for any club in this league.

This news comes after Redknapp revealed yesterday that there are a ‘few irons in the fire’ this week, in terms of transfers.

With only Jacques Maghoma and Kerim Frei our only senior wingers at present, there’s no surprise Harry is looking for widemen.

Also, David Cotterill remains a Blues player, but his future is undecided after being told he too can leave the club.

However, many Blues fans feel Chieck Keita had what it takes to step up to the mark on the left flank. His control, pace and skill were all evident at left-back last season, but his defensive traits aren’t as underlined.

One to think about for ‘Arry… But what do you think, would this be a good move for Blues?
