Blues have today completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund defender Emmanuel Mbende after a successful trial at the club.
The former Dortmund man has signed a deal that will run until the end of the season, but Rowett is expected to offer the Cameroon man an improved deal if he impresses the development squad bosses.
The 19-year-old centre-back who stands at an imposing 6ft 5ins has been signed as more of a long-term project and is expected to feature predominantly in development fixtures.
But what is Mbende’s chance of making the first team squad this season? Pretty slim. The new-boy will have to get ahead of Michael Morrison, Jonathan Spector, Paul Robinson and Shane Lowry in that area of the pitch- which could prove difficult. Blues also have David Edgar to come back from a loan deal at the end of the season too.
But what about his development squad chances? This is where Mbende can impress. He has the chance to form a partnership with Wes Harding in the Under 21’s side, and potentially get a number for Blues’ lesser games- maybe a run in the FA Cup when it comes around.
But Blues fans shouldn’t expect too much too soon. Mbende is definetely being lined up as one for the future, not for now. Just because he has come from European heavyweights, doesn’t mean he will be the next Sergio Ramos just yet.
It’s a long way to the first-team, but Mbende has every chance of making a name for himself at the Blues.
