This was always going to be a special game for the Blues fans with former boss Gary Rowett as Stoke’s manager; Che Adams, Maikel Kieftenbeld, Michael Morrison, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Jacques Maghoma all played under Rowett. Of course, they were going to be hungry.
The game started quite slow for Blues. The first opening fell to Stoke from a free kick. The ball was played into the box, but Blues managed to clear it away from danger.
In the 15th minute, Blues came close. Mahoney whipped a ball in from a free kick, but centre back, Michael Morrison, couldn’t divert the ball under the bar.
In the 29th minute, Stoke came close again, but Lee Camp denied them with a magnificent save. Joe Allen wormed his way through a sea of yellow shirts just to see the glove of Lee Camp save the Blues.
The two teams went into the break all square.
In the second half, Stoke got off to a fast start. In the 48th minute, The Potters had a free kick on the edge of the area. Tom Ince was the taker, but he saw his effort hit the wall.
In the 69th minute, Blues’ right back, Maxime Colin, linked up with Jota, took a shot only to see it hit the under side of the crossbar.
Just 12 minutes later, Che Adams found himself on the end of a ball drilled into him by Lukas Jutkiewicz. It was a perfectly-timed cross, and all he had to do was hurtle the ball into the back of the net. The 3,200 travelling Blues fans went crazy.
In the 86th minute, there were huge appeals for a Stoke penalty. The ball fell to Allen from a Crouch header, he stabbed it into the crowd of yellow shirts and it was blocked in the 6-yard area. To the relief of the Blues players and fans, the referee waved the appeals away. The Stoke protests which followed led to former Blues boss, Gary Rowett being sent off – much to the amusement of the Blues fans.
After 5 minutes added-on time, the referee blew his whistle for full time. This had been a hard-fought away win from Blues who now have to turn their attention to an exciting home encounter on Tuesday evening against Reading FC.
