This was a game which meant a lot to both teams, for Leeds, a chance to go top of the league if Cardiff failed to beat Preston and for Blues; well it would have been a chance to properly kick start their season.
Elland road is always a tough place to go to on a Tuesday night and the home team proved that when they went ahead early just under the 20th minute mark. The Blues were pressing early as under Harry Redknapp they tend to do a lot, but Leeds knew the game Blues wanted to play and they were making it hard for them by pressing as well and it was end to end but the home side broke the deadlock with an early goal scored by Samuel Saiz. The game continued to be tight and both teams deserved a draw and you could tell this by the way both teams were playing.
The home team looked the more threatening although Blues had their fair share of attacks. The first half was like that from start to finish, both teams had chances and deserved goals but it was Leeds who had one.
Blues came out of the blocks the quickest in the second half and it was Harry’s men who nearly equalised with loan striker Sam Gallagher coming close, but still unable to get his first goal. Jermaine Boga and Jota, the two Blues wingers were peppering Leeds with shots and skills and were generally playing very well, but they too couldn’t find the net. It did seem to be all Blues but the home team stood firm and made the visitors wait for the time being. Leeds began to pull the plug on Birmingham slowly but surely with the knowledge from half time that Preston were clearly ahead against Cardiff, Leeds could go top if they carried on with the score they held and that was the case as Blues’ pushing couldn’t quite pay off and they were made to actually pay late on with a killer blow from Leeds United winger Stuart Dallas to send The Whites top of the league for definite, but to deflate the Boys in royal blue to the bottom 4.
Preston North End, who were the team to beat Cardiff to help Leeds to first position, are the Blues’ next opponents on Saturday at St. Andrews. It will be a tough assignment, but with just 4 points from 7 games, we are in desparate need for the new players to continue to gel. The potential is there, but it certainly must be fulfilled sooner rather than later otherwise I’m afraid this season could not just be a long one, but one nearly as bad as last year!
The attacking intent was there, you could clearly see what the team is trying to do, but with that they need to up the anti for the next few weeks and start hitting the target.
