It was never Birmingham’s day down in the South West of England at Ashton gate. A big result needed to keep ahead of the four below, who are fighting for their lives to stay in the league, as are Blues.
A positive team sheet going into the game after a late draw at home to Burton on Saturday. The home side began on the front foot and took a very early lead with a stunning free kick scored by midfielder Marlon Pack. Blues were no where near down and out, at least they had most of the game to hit back. They attempted to get back with a couple of chances. Monk’s side were well and truly in the game, chances from Boga, Maghoma and Jutkiewitz were either saved or missed.
Birmingham got dealt another blow when team of the season forward Bobby Reid struck home after a knock down from Diedhiou. Bristol City were themselves 2-0 up and back in form. Birmingham continued to have chances and it was Blues who ended the first half on a high where Lukas Jutkiewicz scored his third goal in three games.
Second half started and Blues thought they stood a chance after getting themselves back in the game with a goal from Jutkiewicz, as spoken about above. A point would have been nice at Ashton Gate considering the Robins were sitting 8th, just outside the top 6. It looked to be the visitors who had the rub of the green in the second half with chances here and there.
In the early exchanges of the first half, there didn’t seem to be many clear cut chances. Pack had a chance missed, but a log of tackles were flying in and the game couldn’t really get settled.
Opportunities fell to Kieftenbeld, Colin and Davis had efforts blocked and saved. The same went for Jota, who also couldn’t take his chance when they fell to him.
Bristol City killed Birmingham off with kindness in the 84th minute when the two strikers Matty Taylkr and Bobby Reid exchanged a one two which saw Taylor finish off for 3-1. A real bitter pill to swallow for the boys in royal blue but they’ll again take some positives into the Televised derby against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.
