The game was a looked forward to fixture, but it just didn’t live up to its expectation. Blues began with what looked like a 3-5-1-1 with the main surprise being Maghoma in behind new loan signing Sam Gallagher. Still, the game started off quite flat, an early chance by that man in fact Sam Gallagher; which just shaved the post. That, most people thought would have opened up the game, but it didn’t. There was nothing in the game from the first whistle by the referee and neither side had to do more defending than attacking. The game began to be quite frustrating because it’s fair enough that there was no goals but there just were not any chances at all!
The only main threat going forward for Blues was Maghoma, and for the visitors I’d say the young Kelly was nimble and getting into the Blues defence. There was a delay in play for injury to N’doye and that was about the most entertaining thing that happened in the first half. The game started to slowly brake up, but still no team could get a grip on the game. Cohen Brammal, one of the two Arsenal loaners, had a wonderful strike tipped away by Vito Mannone, and that was about the only fascinating thing from a Blues perspective in the first half. Stephen Gleeson was given the nod ahead of both Gardner and Davis and that was to some fans’ disliking because he wasn’t having a very good game and was giving the all away left, right and centre. Carl Jenkinson was forced off with an injury, so on came Emilio Nsue, but at the end of the first half, it was goalless and understandably so.
Fans of both teams would have been hoping that the second 45 were to be better than the first. Reading started the second half off better, they could string passes together, which was something the home team were struggling to do. Sam Gallagher was not seeming to be getting the right service, the player doing all the work was Jaques Maghoma through the middle, and that position of attacking midfield suited him down to the ground. Jon Dadi Bodvarrson, former Wolves striker, was influential in Reading’s attack, but he still couldn’t seem to help Jap Stam’s side into a lead. It was a dry game, and quite a desperate showing from Blues. Gleeson became to grind on many more fans’s minds and was gradually playing worse and worse…
Lukas Jutkiewicz replaced N’doye, later after his injury set back and threw himself about and acted in different fashion to many of the other Blues players, some fans were saying that half of the players in the team today were not trying because they know they’re not going to make Redknapp’s first team when he gets all of his players in and that showed. Maghoma knew he was going to be in it but even when he doesn’t have a good game, or his team aren’t he always seems to keep going just as he did in the home game against Bristol City when he struck the goal to win the game 2-1.
It was a poor end to the game, the desperate showing continued and told when Reading took the lead with a short counter attack two on two. The way that Blues played well in the first half against Bournemouth and the character of the team in the win vs Bristol City, was totally different to Reading, which I think is the main factor into why the fans are frustrated. The situation of Zola’s era from last season, hasn’t seemed to change. Transfer targets promised have fallen through and that’s just one reason why fans ought to be annoyed.
The game just continued to disappoint, Reading on the other hand continued to deliver. Blues had a couple of attempts of corners, but off the back of that Reading scored their second to wrap proceedings up with George Evans slotting in from very close range. Fans may start seeing through Harry Redknapp now and might start to turn on him, or they might stick behind him and let him get on with it, I am on the fence right now because things just do not seem to be getting any better. Hopefully we see a few more signings come in, if not, who knows.
