MATCH REPORT: Birmingham City Ladies 3-0 Arsenal

Ellen White’s hat-trick inspires Birmingham City Ladies to their biggest win over Arsenal in Women’s Super League history.

The England international’s three goals take her tally for the season to 13, four ahead of her nearest rivals.

It was also Birmingham’s sixth consecutive game unbeaten, a run that started back in February.

The Blues took the lead in the eleventh minute thanks to a defence-splitting pass from midfielder Marisa Ewers.

White ran onto her first-time pass before firing the ball past goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal.

Arsenal were almost gifted a way back into the game when Ann-Katrin Berger under-hit a clearance.

Striker Beth Mead closed down the keeper’s kick but was quickly snuffed out as Berger recovered to clear it out for a corner.

With the Gunners looking for an equaliser it was Birmingham who got the vital next goal just before half-time.

Emma Follis dropped the shoulder and stole a yard on defender Louise Quinn before delivering a near-post cross which White converted.

After the break Birmingham looked to soak up the inevitable pressure from the visitors.

Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro decided to mix it up upfront and brought on striker Danielle Carter with 17 minutes remaining.

The change looked to have backfired when Carter clipped the heels of Follis to give the Blues a penalty.

But the keeper guessed right and palmed away Aoife Mannion’s effort from the spot.

The Blues were not to be denied their third though and it was White who sealed it with just three minutes left.

Rachel Williams was allowed time to find the pass and White wrapped it up with a sublime chip over a stranded van Veenendaal.

It was Birmingham City’s ninth home win of the season, having only dropped points to Champions League semi-finalists Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Blues next fixture sees them travel to Kingsmeadow to take on Chelsea on May 9.
