A championship derby for Blues against Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had been steadying the ship under newish manager Paul Lambert, was the date for late February. Blues had Craig Gardner and David Davis back in the mix after both being suspended but a tough away trip this was at the Molineux, where Gianfranco really had to put three points on the board.
Zola’s men were on top in the opening few exchanges, a great start to the game which indeed shocked the home side Wolves… It wasn’t long until Blues’ probing paid off when Maikel Kieftenbeld put the ball in the back of the net on 27’. Only 2 shots on goal in the first half for Blues, a rage of defensive mistakes from Wolves destroyed their chances of a first half comeback because by 32 minutes, Zola’s men were two up with Davis’ first goal since the second city derby and it was total delight in the away end!
Two yellow cards to end the half for Blues conceded by Ryan Shotton and Josh Cogley wasn’t what Blues wanted, but it slowed the clock down at least.
Second half arose and early on, a scrap broke out from a bad foul committed by captain Paul Robinson which got the ex Watford legend sent off, only in the 53rd minute. Young Arsenal defender Kristian Bieliik was then in replacement subbed on for Craig Gardner.
No real threat from the hosts which was a good sign for the boys in royal blue especially the fact we led by two goals to nil but late on, returning striker Nouha Dicko scored in the 73rd minute which did put a spanner in the works, but Blues being down to ten men did worry the away fans a little but we held on and luckily Wolves did not threaten anymore. Two wins in fifteen for Zola, the board are still fully behind him, a tough few weeks it has been to swallow but a solid drilled out win against Wolves in a feisty Midlands derby was just the pill to move up from 16th to 13th.
