Birmingham City Ladies vs Sunderland Ladies
2017/18 Women’s Super League 1
Sunday 1st April, 2018
KO: 14:00
Venue: Damson Park

Birmingham City Ladies will be looking to avenge their biggest defeat of the season when they host Sunderland on Sunday.

Goals from Dominique Bruinenberg, Hayley Sharp and Abbey Joice condemned the Blues to a 3-0 loss back in January.

Since that faithful evening though, Birmingham have gone from strength to strength with the return of striker Ellen White.

The England international has missed eight matches this season but has made up for lost time, scoring seven times in her last seven games.

Sunderland meanwhile come into this weekend’s game on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Everton.

Lucy Staniforth scored straight from a corner kick to cancel out Dan Turner’s opener for Everton.

The Lady Black Cats are currently seventh in the Women’s Super League, six points behind the Blues who sit in fourth.

Team News

Birmingham: Meaghan Sargeant is a doubt for the Blues after illness has kept her out of both the Liverpool and Bristol games.

Sunderland: Victoria Williams is a doubt for the Lady Black Cats after going off injured against Everton after just 34 minutes. Simona Koren has missed the last two months through injury but could start against Birmingham after returning late on against Everton.

Head-To-Head

Birmingham has faced Sunderland 14 times since the Women’s Super League began in 2011, and have won eight of those meetings.

Sunderland has won four times with the remaining two matches ending in a draw.

Birmingham’s biggest win over Sunderland in the WSL era came on the final day of the 2016 season in a 7-1 rout.

Sunderland 3-0 Birmingham City (January 6)

Our first match back after the winter break and the Blues did not turn up for this one. The hosts proved deserved winners with three goals without reply.

Predicted Starting XI

Thoughts from Manager Marc Skinner

After the heavy defeat to Sunderland back in January, manager Marc Skinner is confident lessons have been learned and the home advantage should give them the edge on Sunday.

“The defeat to Sunderland was a big wake-up call for us,” said Skinner.

“If you look at our form since that night, I think you can see that.

“There’s so much I learnt from that defeat. Things I will never let happen again.

“When we play Sunderland hopefully it will be a different performance from this team.

“We said at the start of the season we wanted to make our home a fortress.

“Make teams fear coming to play us and making sure they know they have to be at their best to beat us.”

Great Since ’68 Score Predictions

Birmingham City have looked very impressive this season.

But the Sunderland game was a real lowlight for us, probably the worst performance of the season.

I expect a reaction this time around and with home advantage I can see us winning 2-1.

My co-host Chris Pugh has also gone for a 2-1 win.
