It’s been an argument that has been around for years in the footballing world: safe standing.
It divides opinion completely, and is easy to see why, for a number of different reasons, which I won’t go into today.
But I was curious to see whether some Birmingham fans would support a safe standing section at St Andrews, and whether it’s something fans feel could be sustainable and safe for the future.
If I’m being honest, I can see safe standing make a return to the game. I think a lot of the Football League clubs are behind the idea, with teams like Bristol City installing a very small safe-standing section in a new area of their ground.
It’s only a very small step in the progress, but one I hope other Football League clubs will look to for ideas, and to simply see if it works.
In regards to St Andrews, I do think that there is a place for it there. As mentioned in an article a couple of weeks ago, I’d love to see the atmosphere return to the club. I think it’s been lost a little bit of late, despite the stunning job that Gary Rowett has done since his appointment last year.
I think if St Andrews is rocking again, I think that will only help the team tenfold, and safe standing could assist this.
There are a few questions about it, I understand that, but as a concept, it’s one I’d support if it ever became available. Where the safe standing section would go etc is difficult to say- and whether it will ever be installed is also difficult to suggest.
But I fully believe that if there was a safe standing section at St Andrews, it would help with the atmosphere.
I fully understand that some people want to sit down during games, but some people do want to stand and create an atmosphere that might push the team on to victory.
