After surviving by the skin of their teeth last season, Harry Redknapp has a number of changes to make to the Birmingham City squad before the new campaign begins.
With the squad due to return to training in early July, the rumour mill has begun, but nothing has been decided yet by Harry or the board at St.Andrews…
Here is who I think Blues should sign over the next couple of months ready for next season:
A case for defence?
Last season, the Blues weakest area on the field was the back four. From when Gianfranco Zola took charge and brought his new style of play, the defence have all looked a bit shaky and lacked confidence.
In my opinion, I would like to see the Blues sign a player who is young, but also a player who has played alongside an experienced defender in the past…or a player who has years of experience on his side.
Someone like John Terry might be a longs shot but as he’s come to the end of his contract at Chelsea, I could see him fitting quite nicely into the defence alongside Ryan Shotton who had a roller-coaster of a season under Zola.
In central midfield playing alongside Craig Gardner who also has Premier League experience, I would like to see Harry bring in another familiar face from Chelsea, in the form of Ruben Loftus Cheek.
Although he only made eight appearances in all competitions last season, he has played with the likes of the Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, meaning he is learning from the best… One thing he certainly would get at Birmingham City is playing time as well!
Goals win games
Now the penultimate signing I would like to see Birmingham City bring in is an Irish winger called Jonny Hayes. He is 29 years of age, so he has plenty of years left in him.
Another major weak point for Blues last season was finding the back of the net and although Hayes only scored 10 goals for Aberdeen in 2016-17, that tally is more than enough for a wide man.
Yes, I know there has been plenty of rumours about him signing, but Robbie Keane would also be a steal for Blues! Nothing has been written in stone just yet, and even though he is 36 years of age and we might only get a season out of him, he can certainly can find the net.
In 712 appearances, he has scored 317 times which is more than impressive…
I could be unrealistic and suggest that we’re going to sign Troy Deeney, but to be honest even though he is a proud supporter of the boys in Royal Blue, I think for now his future is in the Premier League.
Until next time,
