Midfielder David Davis has reminded us what an important player he is in recent weeks and has continued to impress.
Davis was recalled for the derby with Villa and it proved to be a good move from Rowett as the aggression was needed in the middle of the park. The former Wolves midfielder was yet to start a league fixture before the Brentford game because of the strong partnership between Kieftenbeld and Gleeson, which was very much cemented.
Two impressive starts later against Brentford and Leeds with two clean sheets away from home means it will be hard for Davis to be on the bench again after the international break. Here’s what Gary Rowett had to say about his recent performances:
“Davo has been unfortunate not to be in the team,” said Rowett. “I have said it before but we have got three very good central midfielders and I could play any two of those three on any given day and get a very similar level.
“He had a little spell which I spoke to him about when he came on as sub he looked a little bit edgy, nervous and trying too hard because he had been out of the side.
“That’s the type of lad he is, he is so enthusiastic I don’t think that helped him.
“But I think he has settled back down to some better performances and was excellent against Brentford and Leeds.”
This is good for the team as not only does Davis offer a little more aggression in the middle of the park but the trio will be wanting to start every game, so the competition is there.
Here’s what Davis had to say after the Villa game about his return:
I haven’t really hit the ground running this season, for my own personal standards. But the gaffer’s been good with me, always been speaking with me and the lads have been terrific, especially the guys in the middle. I can’t speak highly enough of them. For me its all about waiting and trying to take my chance when it comes around and hopefully I’ve given the gaffer some food for thought.”
That he has done and hopefully we get to see him start more games starting from next week against QPR. What are thoughts on his return? Let us know in the comments below!
