It looks like Harry Redknapp will be battling it out yet again with Lee Johnson in this transfer window for Luton Town striker Isaac Vassell.

There has been a lot of transfer talk surrounding Bristol centre back Aden Flint and his counter part Joe Bryan in particular, but Redknapp will come toe to toe with them for this target.

Redknapp has confirmed his interest for the in-form Hatters striker. Luton have offered him an improved contract in an attempt to ward off any interest as his expires next summer.

As for Blues, they are finding it hard to hit the target at the minute, that much is clear to everyone. The season has just got underway with a 1-0 defeat away at Ipswich at the weekend, but Blues fans will become frustrated as they did last campaign, seeing minimal finishing taking place on the pitch.

The gaffer has made clear he has limited resources and not even a bench to help out and change a game if needs be. This is definitely one man that can muster a few goals at the moment.

At 23, the striker is fast approaching his prime after coming up through the ranks on loan at the likes of Truro City, Weymouth and Bideford. With the valuable experience gained, Vassell is now Town’s main threat infront of goal and there’s no wonder they want to keep hold of him.

Luton missed out of promotion last season, losing 6-5 on aggregate to Blackpool in the playoff semi-finals. However, this season Vassell has hit the ground running, bagging two goals in the 8-2 victory at home to Yeovil Town on Saturday, so luring him to Blues may be an even bigger challenge if he continues to score.

Even by these highlights (3rd and 4th goals) you can see Vassell’s attacking prowess to get past defenders with ease and find himself more often than not in a 1 on 1 situation. The first goal shows his strength to get past not one, but two defenders and slot it past the keeper with ease. Not to mention the second goal – a diagonal ball is lofted to him and with still a lot of work to do, he manages to touch it down on his left and volley it into the far corner – a finish like that has become a distant memory down St Andrews.

I think Vassell has what it takes to take the jump of two divisions and be an out and out striker at Blues. With Che Adams playing along side him, both could feed off eachothers pace and ability to get through the opposing backline, something Clayton Donaldson simply hasn’t shown as of late…

With the height of Roberts, Morrison, N’Doye and maybe the incoming Flint, I don’t think Blues really need another target man like Jutkiewicz, but another player with high energy is a must. Blues showed glimpses of confident play around the 18-yard box on Saturday, with N’Doye and Gardner linking well with Adams, but they just need an extra cog in the system and I think this is the player to solve that.

Redknapp thinks so too:

“He’s quick, he’s strong. He has an awful lot of pace and he’s got a good future ahead of him.”

The £1million man has even been tipped to follow in the footsteps of former Hatter Andre Gray and you can see why!

Speaking to Bedfordshire News, Hatters boss Jones admits that Vassell can “go as far as he wants to go”:

“That’s (contract talks) in house, but everyone that’s here now we pretty much want to keep. Isaac knows our feelings towards him and we would like him to be here for a long long time.

“We’d like him to sign a long term deal, and if he wants to do that we’ll do that, but Isaac’s a player we would like to have here long term.

“He’s only had a year in our midst but he’s developed in such a way that’s fantastic. To be fair, it’s probably not even been a year.

“Second half of the season he kicked right on. He came back in pre-season in wonderful form, and that’s where we are. “We can’t second guess anyone – all we can concentrate on our day to day things.

“He can go as far as he wants to go. He has certain attributes which are different from other people and he has a desire to do well. He knows there’s a lot going on and people are speaking about him, but he’s only a year into his development.

“He’s the best lad you will ever meet. He looks you in the eye and you know what you will get from him. He wants to get better and he deserves everything he will get, but right now he’s focused on doing well for us.”

With 14 goals in his last 28 matches, there’s no wonder he’s gaining interest from bigger clubs. His teammate James Collins has described him as “probably the quickest and most powerful lad I have played with.”
