Gary Rowett on who will be first choice goalkeeper

Gary Rowett has his say on who will be number 1 this season. After Darren Randolph left for West Ham and Colin Doyle arrived at Blackpool, Blues were left with one senior goalkeeper – Nick Townsend.

Much has been spoke of young Brummie stopper Nick Townsend and his undoubted potential. However many will say he isn’t ready for the number 1 spot.

As for new signing Adam Legzdins, he returns to his boyhood club where Gary Rowett see’s him also having potential but instead adding more competition in the goalkeeping department for Rowett to think about. He has started for Derby many times so he does have championship experience that probably helped the move along.

That brings us to yesterday’s signing – Tomasz Kuszczak. Signing on a two year contract, the former Manchester United man has the valuable experience that Rowett said made the deal harder to complete as he is a top goalkeeper.

The stats don’t lie as he has the 4th highest save percentage in the Premier League since 2004. A lot can change in 10 years but there is no doubt he will impress at Blues after being a part of Brighton’s promotion push 3 years ago, where he conceded the least amount of goals in that season.

I was a bit surprised Brighton let him go as he played a big part in their impressive but yet unsuccessful running. Let’s hope he’s forgotten the time Blues fans chanted “Its all your fault” at him…

With this competition for the number 1 shirt, Rowett is not defining who will be first, second and third choice keeper:

“I think it’s fantastic competition, you’ve got Tomasz who’s played in the Premier League, Adam who’s played regularly in the Championship and Nick who’s got great potential and that’s what we want.”

    Rowett went on to say:

“I think for a Championship club that wants to achieve something has to have that depth. I spoke to Nick about it in the summer and I said you’ve got every opportunity to push very very hard.”

“If it doesn’t work out we’ve got a plan for you to go out on loan and get some games, maybe with a recall so he can come back instantly. I think that’s something we can look at as the season goes on.”

“Again nothings defined. Of course everyone will have their own opinion on who might be one, two and three, but for us everyone has got an opportunity to impress. I think we have got three excellent goalkeepers.”
