We’re coming up to the half way point in this January transfer window and clubs will be looking to bag some bargains in the next two weeks.
We take a look at five players we think Blues should try and pursue before deadline day.
1) Steven Caulker (Free)
Proven at this level, the former Cardiff City and QPR defender is without a club.
Although he’s been battling with depression off the field, I think a chance at Blues could prove to be a good move for him to get his career back on track. Also, with Harlee Dean and Marc Roberts firmly cementing their places in the starting eleven, having someone of Cauker’s caliber in the squad will not only improve the competition for places, but also provide strong back-up going into the latter stages of the season and into the Summer.
Cauker left Loftus Road at the back end of December by mutual consent. However, taking a gamble on the former £8million man could be worth taking.
2) Jack Marriott (£7million)
One player that’s setting League One alight and making all the headlines is Peterborough’s Jack Marriott.
His brace against Villa in the FA Cup has only added to his reputation as being one of the best forwards in the third division.
His 23 goals for the promotion hopefuls haven’t gone unnoticed. It is understood Cotterill has been keen on bringing the frontman in and it’s been reported one Championship club has reportedly seen a £3.5million bid rejected by Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony. Two more bids of £4million from separate second tier clubs have also been rejected.
We can only imagine his realistic value to be around the £7million mark, at least. Will Cotterill be willing to spend that much on one player, who knows, but this is certainly the best in-form player at the moment to get Blues firing up the league.
3) Billy Sharp (£1million)
Cotterill may want to look to an experienced forward in this window. One player that has come up through the ranks is Billy Sharp.
Still only 31, the Blades man was a major part to their success and although he’s not been firing much lately, he is no doubt a useful asset to have as backup. With Sam Gallagher’s loan up at the end of the season, Cotterill will be setting his eyes on a permanent frontman before the season is up.
With him behind Clayton Donaldson, James Wilson and Leon Clarke in the pecking order, could you see Sharp wearing Blue?
4) Krystian Bielik (£2million)
Another defender that we know will be a valuable asset is Beilik. He impressed under his short spell at Blues, making 10 appearances. Many Blues fans were quick to applaud his performances, but could a permanent move away from the Emirates be on the cards?
The 20-year-old is currently valued at £2million, a fair price for such a promising youngster. Arsenal may listen to an offer from Cotterill and with the future of Michael Morrison in slight doubt, this would be a admirable piece of business that could keep Roberts and Dean on their toes.
5) Marcus Maddison (£2million)
Linked with him last season, Maddison could walk into any Championship side at the moment – that’s why Blues should go back in for him.
The 25-year-old’s tally of five goals and 15 assists indicate he’s a big fish in need of a bigger pond. Leeds have already made a bid of £2million for the winger and Cotterill may have to dig deeper to gain his services.
Although Maghoma has stepped up his game, Boga is not our player, so a permanent deal for Maddison should be considered as he is a major threat in League One right now. Posh director Barry Fry could pull some strings for us maybe…
So there we have it, five possible targets that would improve the squad in the long term this season. What do you think, do any of these take your pick or should Cotterill be looking at the loan market in this moment in time?
