Do Blues need another winger?

Despite there being ongoing transfer speculation, Blues are yet to add to their squad this January transfer window, apart from the expected extension offered to James Vaughan.

The Huddersfield man has signed from now until the end of the season- a great option seeing as Clayton Donaldson still hasn’t quite recovered from injury.

But an area of the pitch where there has been a lot of speculation is out wide, with Gary Rowett thought to be interested in strengthening out-wide due to the departure of Demarai Gray to Leicester City.

Names that have been thrown around have been Will Buckley from Sunderland and Callum McManaman from West Brom- two very decent players indeed.

But do we need them?

Currently, Blues have David Cotterill, Viv Soloman-Otobar, Jacques Maghoma and Koby Arthur as out-and-out widemen.

When in-form and fit, Cotterill is one of the best wingers in the league. If the transfer speculation is true, former Blues boss Chris Hughton is interested in bringing the Welsh international to the Amax this January but has to pay in excess of £1million.

Jacques Maghoma has also been excellent for Blues this season, contributing with goals and assists from the wing. The Congolese international is a key part of Rowett’s squad, and it is clear to see why he wanted to bring him to St Andrews after working with him at Burton Albion.

It is the two youngsters who will make or break any potential deal though.

Viv Soloman-Otobar is on the cusp of the first-team and after making his first start against MK Dons a couple of weeks ago, he is well on the way to becoming another young Blues starlet.

The academy product is highly thought of by both the management and the fans, with some supporters likening him to Demarai Gray. If Viv can live up to his potential, there is no doubt that he can go on and be successful in the first-team.

Koby Arthur is a little more difficult to judge. The Ghanaian winger is currently out injured and has rarely featured under Gary Rowett. Arthur was given somewhat of a break under Lee Clark but that fizzled out after a few games and he disappeared back into the U21’s team.

It is whether Gary Rowett feels Arthur and Soloman-Otobar are the two men to lead Blues forward which will ultimately make his mind up.

In Maghoma and Cotterill, Blues have two well-established Championship wingers who, injuries aside, have been in good form this season.

Only time will tell, but that £3.7million has to be spent some way right?
